Mexican Independence Day events, Reggaeton sets, and more

Hi guys,

This week has been heavy. From learning Latinos can be targeted just by looks (crazy), to endless arguments over empathy- I had to log off. Instead of scrolling, I want to focus on what matters: keeping access to community events, especially when it feels hard to even leave the house.

As someone who promotes travel and events in Latino spaces, I’ve been reflecting. History shows us we’ve always needed community, places where we can show up proudly and stay rooted in who we are, and not let hate pull us down. That’s hard, I know (!!), but joy in community spaces doesn’t mean ignoring the issues it means standing strong in the middle of them.

So I hope you show up proudly too- whether it’s a Latino-owned run club, a Palestinian DJ set, an art show raising funds for families affected by ICE, or a Black-owned wellness circle. As collectives grow in L.A., we’re proving we create our own freedom and that we ARE the majority😗

Since Hispanic Heritage Month is right around the corner why not share one of my favorite Guatemalan Restaurants called Puchica in Sherman Oaks! I always get asked what’s my go to Guatemalan restaurant in LA and never share lol but I’ve been going here for over 10 years and it’s SO good. They also have live music on Sunday’s which is a nice touch. I’d try the antojitos Puchica if you’ve never tried Guatemalan food -so you can try all our appetizers and see which ones you like.

Friday September 12

The Hola Mexico Film Festival, largest Mexican Film Festival outside of Mexico, begins Sept. 12, celebrating Mexican Cinema and culture.

Alt Plus will host an Old School Reggaetón party, bringing back the early 2000s beats that defined a generation.

Benny Boy Brewing will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with live music, millennial lotería, and even a mechanical bull.

The Dodgers–Giants rivalry takes center stage at a community watch party, with street food and local vendors adding to the atmosphere.

Newcomer Café Tondo in Chinatown hosts its first Mexican Independence Day celebration with music, drinks, and dancing.

Grand Annex hosts Noche de Cumbia, celebrating the genre’s Latin American roots with live music and dance

This Friday at Mercado La Paloma, The Rehearsal brings a Tiny Desk–style showcase that shows how L.A.’s music scene thrives in community spaces and reaches a global audience online.

The Last Summer of Salsa at La Plaza wraps up the season with live music and dancing, showing how downtown L.A. transforms into a space for community and culture.

Saturday September 13

Lila Society, a reggaetón-inspired wellness club, is hosting a free Pilates Sculpt class at Plaza La Alameda.

Suavecito Run Club is hosting two Latino themed circuit events!

Floreciendo en Moviemiento is hosting a Latino Heritage Month Run series where they’ll be running across the city of L.A. while supporting local coffee shops. The first run will be at 7:30 a.m. at ULEW coffee shop, a Guatemalan-owned coffee shop.

Hot Girl Market, a monthly gathering of Latina and women-led vendors, returns this Saturday as part of its second-Saturday series.

Every second Saturday, Homeboy Industries hosts a pop-up in collaboration with Homegirl Café and Homeboy Threads, highlighting food and goods created within the community.

El Grito in San Fernando marks Latino Heritage Month with music, food, and community traditions tied to Mexican Independence.

Te Deseo Rosas is a red room art exhibition that brings Latino artists and community together, using art, culture, and connection to support families impacted by ICE raids.

Noche de Cumbia by Cumbiatón comes to the Ford, featuring performances by Sonido Gallo Negro and celebrating cumbia’s place in L.A. nightlife.

Beach Party in Bolsa Chica! *

At Angel City Brewing, the Radical Clothing Swap invites the community to trade clothes for free, tying sustainability to L.A.’s creative street style.

Sunday September 14

East L.A.’s Mexican Independence Day Parade begins at 10 a.m., a tradition that brings music, resources, and cultural pride to the heart of the neighborhood.

Roots & Routes teams up with CicLAvia, the event where L.A. streets close to cars and open for people. They’ll host a market and festival with DJs, vendors, and art celebrating local culture.

Warp Mode and Baile host a daytime party mixing global sounds and Latin rhythms, showing the diversity of L.A.’s music scene.

Zona Libre is a music celebration of Latino L.A. at the Skirball Cultural Center, presented in partnership by Grand Performances, Zócalo Public Square, and the Skirball.
